Children’s home receives R1,8-m grant

THE National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) awarded a much-needed R1,8-m to St Monica’s Children’s Home on the Bluff this month.

“In this difficult economic environment we are overwhelmed to get this grant and relieved to know that for a little while, at least, we will be able to provide comfortably for our children,” said director, Althea Govender.

St Monica’s is a non-governmental organisation that provides care for 84 children in need from the ages of three to 18, who are housed in six cottages on the premises and attend local schools.

“The money will make a significant difference in improving the lives of the children in our care and we are very thankful.” It will be used to provide for the physical needs of the children; the operating costs of the home and as a contribution to personnel expenses to allow for additional posts to be created.

The NLDTF uses funds from the proceeds of the National Lottery. The Lotteries Act and regulations guide the way in which this funding may be allocated. The NLDTF wants the grants to make a difference to the lives of all South Africans, especially the most vulnerable and to improve the sustainability of the beneficiary organisations.

The available money is distributed to registered and qualifying non-profit organisations in the fields of charities, arts, culture and national heritage and sport and recreation. By placing its emphasis on areas of greatest need and potential, the NLDTF contributes to South Africa’s development.
