Beach clean-up nets over 100 bags of litter

THE South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) hosted a climate change talk and beach clean-up at Cuttings and Isipingo beaches on Saturday, 12 October.

About 160 youngsters took part, with 85 at Cuttings Beach and 75 at Isipingo Beach. They youth arrived at the beaches at 8.30am, shuttled in by three buses organised by the SDCEA. They arrived with much enthusiasm and excitement, according to SDCEA chairman, Desmond D’Sa.

Despite the heat, the eager children took to the beaches with bin bags, gloves, rakes, wire, wooden pokers and spades to clear up the trash. Over 100 bags of litter were collected by noon, whereafter the youths were given lunch.

“This clean-up was not only a fun and exciting day at the beach, but was also an educational experience about climate change and the major contributors. This initiative has taught them the value and concept behind working together to create a clean and sustainable environment that is beautiful, healthy and toxin-free. Fishermen on the beach were also educated about bringing a bag and taking their litter and waste home,” said Desmond.
