Family mourns as toddler drowns

A yellowwood Park family mourns the death of their one-and-a-half-year-old toddler who drowned in their Coedmore Avenue home on Wednesday, 16 October.

Montclair SAP’s Cst Alex Maphumulo, who responded to the call, said: “We received a call about a drowning in progress in Coedmore Avenue. The incident happened at about 7.30am but we received the call at 8.30am. On arrival at the scene, we saw paramedics attempting to resuscitate the boy. A few minutes later he was declared dead.

The boy was under the care of his two aunts and was waiting for his transport to take him to crèche. He allegedly walked out the house to the garage where one of his aunts was busy studying. They were playing together when he walked off in the direction of the house. After a few minutes his older aunt, who was in the house, went looking for him in the garage where he had been with his younger aunt, but he was not there. Both parties had assumed he was with the other.

They searched the house and couldn’t find him. After an extensive search of the premises, they saw him lying face down in the deep end of their pool. One of the aunts jumped into the pool and pulled him out.”

Emergency personnel were alerted. His mother, who was at work, was notified. She arrived and was informed her son was declared dead.

The family became emotional when his body was removed by state mortuary. Lt Leopold Jojozi of Montclair SAP confirmed a case has been opened and is under investigation.
