Senior citizens alerted to safety issues

ON Wednesday, 2 October, Brighton Beach SAP communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux spoke to a gathering of elderly residents of Clairwood on concerns the police have about their wellbeing and safety.

“They were cautioned with regards to the number of individuals who have access to their financial resources, with an emphasis being placed on signing powers to make withdrawals from a financial institute, duplicate debit cards and sharing their ATM PIN codes with family members.”

Capt Le Roux said a neighbour’s contact details should be posted on a wall in at least two easily-accessible places in their homes in case of emergencies. She spoke to the group about safety when using public transport, travelling on foot, shopping and carrying handbags or wallets.

Safety guidelines in the form of a brochure developed by Capt Le Roux and sponsored by ADT Security were handed out. Information from the Older Persons Act, 2006 was simplified in the brochure, along with other safety guidelines and emergency contact numbers.

“Thank-you to the Clairwood Community Policing Forum for affording me the opportunity to speak to the Senior Citizens Club members, who actively participated in all the discussions and thank-you, also to ADT Security for sponsoring the brochures.”
