Man dies in hostel tavern brawl

A TAVERN brawl turned deadly when a man (23) was stabbed to death at SJ Smith Hostel on Saturday, 28 September.

Four friends who are groomsmen at Clairwood Race Course were drinking, when two of them started fighting over a cellphone. The two friends who were watching tried to break-up the fight. The deceased allegedly provoked his friend who was trying to help him, which resulted in his friend stabbing him to death. The assailant fled the scene.

The fight took place after midnight and the man was arrested the same day. He was found hiding out at the stables at Clairwood Race Course. The murder weapon was found on him. He was charged with murder and appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 30 September. The case was postponed to Monday, 7 October for bail application.
