Comment from local organisation on ‘Paper truck crashes through racecourse fence’

A TRUCK believed to be carrying paper crashed and spilled its cargo on the northbound onramp to the M4 near Clairwood Racecourse at about 8am on Friday, 4 October.

It is not known what caused the accident, but the truck and its payload fell to the side of the road, breaking the brick wall and onto the racecourse property. Access to the off-ramp was blocked for several hours and another truck had to be brought in to hoist the damaged vehicle from the scene.

“In spite of the danger that lurks in South Durban communities, having the Clairwood Racecourse developed into a logistics and distribution centre to cater for the proposed dug out port is by far is the worst possible development idea in a community that already faces massive risk of trucking accidents,” said Desmond D’Sa of the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA).

“It is said with the new development, about 2,000 additional trucks will be entering and leaving the warehouse on a daily basis. This will not only degrade the quality of our roads but will put the lives of our families at risk on the roads.”
