Fields Hill carnage sparks local truck protest

THE recent carnage in Pinetown, which killed 23 people, has sparked a renewed call for tougher trucking regulations.

The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) is partnering with 15 organisations from across Durban to lead a protest against heavy vehicles in residential areas or on busy roads. On Friday, 27 September they will march along Solomon Mahlangu Drive (Edwin Swales VC), an infamous road in the local trucking saga, which has claimed the lives of many over the years.

“Truck volume has increased over the years, therefore increasing the number of fatal accidents on our roads. The recent accident in Pinetown has caused a shockwave throughout communities. This bloodshed is unacceptable and action needs to be taken to get these monsters off the roads,” said SDCEA co-ordinator, Desmond D’Sa.

Residents are urged to join in the protest, which is expected to last two hours. For information, call Desmond on 083-982-6939. – erinh@dbn.caxton.co.za
