Pupils get stuck in at Crow

SEVENTEEN high school pupils added spring cheer to the Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (Crow) from Monday, 2 September until Wednesday, 4 September.

The grade 10 Westville Boys High School pupils volunteered their time to help Crow with their duties including preparing food for the animals and feeding them, cleaning cages and clearing bushes. Other grade 10 pupils of the school spent their time doing various community services, volunteering at orphanages and doing farm work.

After hearing about Crow through one of his teachers, Joshua Jonkman (16) and Cullen Larson made arrangements for their classmates to volunteer at Crow. “I thought it would be fun to do something involving animals because I have a passion for wildlife. It’s been hard work but I have enjoyed it. I didn’t know about Crow until my teacher told me about it. I wish I knew earlier,” said Joshua.
His highlights of the week were feeding the different animals.

During the same week, pupils in different grades took part in different leadership programmes, leaving the matrics to write their trial exams in peace.

Crow’s communications officer, Paul Hoyte said: “It’s wonderful to see schools putting pressure on the pupils to make a difference and to be active role players in the community. It is really heartwarming to see the pupils so enthusiastic and putting a lot of effort into their work.”
