Danica dazzles her way into KZN ice skating team

BLUFFITE, Danica de Bruyn is one of the 16 members of KZN's first synchronised ice skating team in 15 years, which is set to compete in the Gauteng championships.

The Amanzimtoti-based team hopes to bring glory back to KZN when it competes in Gauteng from Thursday to Sunday, 29 August to 1 September. Danica, aged 12, who has been training as a figure skater for one-and-a-half years, said she was overjoyed to be part of the team and believes they have what it takes to do well in the competition.

She got onto the ice after watching her brother, Deryn de Bruyn, who is a KZN ice hockey player and who teaches beginners ice hockey and basic skating. Since then, the grade 7 Bluff Christian Academy pupil hasn’t looked back. She loves every second on the ice.

Apart from skating training three times a week, Danica enjoys modelling, reading and all school sports and received her school’s Victrix Ludorum award three-years-in-a-row for sport. Her family has supported her through everything and she thanks them for helping her make it into the KZN team. But this is only the first step for the youngster, who hopes to make it on the international scene in the years to come.

Each member of the team needs to raise R6,000 towards costs for the Gauteng competition for flights and accommodation and she and her family have been making the rounds through raffles, and money collections. However, they still have a little more to raise to reach the total. To make a donation towards Danica, email simoneldb@vodamail.co.za for details.
