Old rivals put their boots in for memorial challenge

OLD rivalries will be brought to the fore as Bayview and Fynnlands old boys compete in the annual soccer memorial challenge this weekend.

In 2010 a Bayview Football Club reunion Facebook page was started with the aim of reuniting ex-players, coaches and supporters to share memories and photos. Sports and social events followed, including a challenge match between Bayview and Fynnlands old boys in honour of people connected to the club who had since died.

The first memorial challenge was held on 27 August, 2011 and included a match-up between the over 35s and 45s. The third annual competition takes place on Saturday, 24 August at Fynnlands Sports Club during a day of fun and games, starting at 9am. Since many of the older players are well over 60-years-old, the older age group has been changed to over 50.

The memorial day will include entertainment for children and music and food and drinks will be on sale. There will also be a match between some of the youngsters and the old boys challenge will commence at 1.30pm.
