Music festival to set the tune for year-end holidays

Toti jollers will have their very own music festival to herald the start of the December festive season.

The Summer Jams 2013 music festival takes place on Kingsway High School’s sports field on Saturday, 7 December and it will feature all the talented Toti bands to come out of the region in recent years.

“The Summer Jams festival is a fundraiser organised by the Old Kings for Kingsway,” said Old Kings vice-chairman, Gavin Walsh, who will also rock the stage on the day with his musos, the Gus Brown Band.

“The Old Kings organisation was formed early this year and it is gaining ground among past Kingsway pupils,” said chairman, Ross Fountain. “We want to utilise school assets and past pupils to fundraise for the school. Funds will go towards scholarships and any renovations or new facilities the school needs.”

Gates to the festival will open at 11am with the first band on stage at noon. There are 12 bands in total and the headline act, The Arrows, will close the festival with their set at 11pm. Other bands include the Jordi Band (Durban), Dave Starke (Richards Bay), East Coast Radio’s Be The Band winners, The Kickstands (Scottburgh), The Accidentals, Fools of Fate (Toti), Manuvah To Land (Toti), the Hinds Brothers (Durban), Redlight Stereo (Toti), Catlike Thieves (Toti) and the Paper Planes (Toti).

If the inaugural festival is a success, the plan is to grow it into a two-day festival next year. “The idea is to uplift the community. There are a lot of past pupils who visit Toti in December, that’s why we decided on that date.”

Food chariots will take care of the hungry and South African Breweries will donate infrastructure for bars. “There will be secure parking and ET Security will ensure everyone is safe,” said Gus. “We want to keep it local and get local businesses involved.”

Tickets will be available from Computicket in two weeks’ time. Early bird tickets cost R110 and R150 on the day.
