Cure SA of women abuse in women’s month

SA's sobering status as the country with the highest rate of gender-based violence should make us ashamed

NATIONAL Women’s Day has rolled around again – just in time for a spike in the number of women abuse cases that appear to coincide with the very month set aside to honour the important role played by the fairer sex in our society.

This incongruous and inconvenient irony is an unequivocal truth nonetheless.

South Africa is said to have the highest rate of gender-based violence in the world, which includes stats related to rape and domestic violence. This sobering status is one that should make every citizen hang their head in shame. Equally, it should galvanise all South Africans into action.

What would be an amazing catharsis for this beloved country is to seek out the root causes that underlie this frightening reality, and during Women’s Month, make serious inroads towards establishing an intervention that will undo this seriously detrimental and destructive habit.

Violence of any kind is by its very nature never constructive or of benefit. Wiping out the epic proportions of women abuse should become our core calling, not only in August but 24-7, 365.
