Patrol duo bags bad guys on the Bluff

BRIGHTON Beach SAP's dynamic patrol duo, Sgt Robert Jooste and Cst Samukelo Memela's vigilance led to the arrest of three Bluff housebreakers.

On Wednesday, 10 July at about 9.30pm the Brighton Beach detective tracking and tracing pair, who were on patrol, were alerted to a housebreaking close by in Hignett Road. Conducting slow patrols on the possible exit routes from the road, they noticed two suspicious-looking men walking along Grays Inn Road.
A search of the two men revealed cable wiring, lights and plugs. Sgt Jooste contacted the officers attending the housebreaking complaint and it was confirmed the recovered items were those stolen from the property.
The two men aged 18 and 45 were charged with housebreaking and theft and appeared in the Durban Court on 18 July, where bail was denied as investigations into similar crimes in the area continue.
Five days later, Sgt Jooste and Cst Memela were informed that a man they had been searching for may be in the area they were patrolling. With assistance from Tactical Security, they began a search and soon noticed a man carrying a heavy bag along St Patricks Road.
They trailed the man with their vehicles lights switched off. When they switched the lights on, the man fled into a bushy area near Wentworth Road. The pair followed him and requested the Tactical Security team to wait on Bluff Road, where they suspected the man would resurface.
As predicted he left the bushes near their look-out point, was boxed in by the police and security officers and was arrested. A search showed he had side cutters and pliers in his possession and he was charged with being in possession of housebreaking implements.
Investigations established he was wanted for a housebreaking and theft case in Bluff Road and an armed robbery in Arum Road in March.
The 20-year-old appeared in Durban Court on 17 July and was denied bail as further investigations are conducted.
Brighton Beach SAP management commends Sgt Jooste and Cst Memela on their successful arrests and thanks the Tactical Security members who assisted.
