Crèche gets Mandela Day make-over

IN the spirit of Mandela Day, members of Oxfam in partnership with the Wentworth Crèche Forum (WCF), and Save the Children KZN pledged their time to make-over a local crèche.

Little David Educare at the Durban Children’s Society in Wentworth was selected as the recipient of the Oxfam initiative, which included the collection and donation of paint, toys, dress-up clothes, an outdoor water tap, toys, books, crayons, a plastic box, cushions and a large cupboard. A wigwam was erected, rooms were painted, gardens were renovated, a steel structure was painted and two swings were erected. A large mural was also designed and will be painted over time.
Parents of the crèche children brought plants and the children planted them. Family members also supplied sandwiches and cooked lunch for the workers, while local teenagers served coffee and tea.

“Oxfam is very proud to make a tangible contribution to a project we have supported for a number of years. The WCF, supported by our partner Save the Children, provides an excellent example of what the future of community-based child care should be,” said Allan Moolman, Oxfam country director.
In closing, the children sang the national anthem, happy birthday to ‘Tata’, and a thank-you song to Oxfam. Moolman also said thank-you to all involved in the crèche’s upliftment.
