Women’s football fosters unity at YWP

I encourage girls from 13 and upwards to consider joining this family. We don't discriminate, we just love," she said.

SPORTS can open the door to many opportunities and benefits including friendship, health, sportsmanship and discipline.

This is what the Yellowwood Park Football Club women’s team has to offer as they open their arms to new player who are interested in joining their team.

The team, which is now a year old, has about 30 players who train and participate in matches. But it is about more than just winning for many players, who enjoy the bond and family-like friendships that the girls foster while enjoying the beautiful game.

Coach, Gordon Forbes-Harding encourages local women from Montclair, Woodlands, Woodhaven and Yellowwood Park to join him and the team on Mondays and Wednesdays for training from 6pm to 7pm. “It’s a good way to socialise. The girls here are more than just teammates. They have grown to respect each other and love each other like they are family. Physically, the training will benefit you and we encourage each other to work harder,” he said.

In his team, they follow four simple rules: “It’s God first no matter your denomination, then family, education and lastly football. It’s about finding a balance in your life, and here is where you can learn and master it,” added Gordon.

Watching the girls train together, one feels their joy and pride as they kick the ball to each other or run around the field. Captain and goalkeeper, Tanya Thomas said for her, it’s more than just a bunch of people – they have grown close to her heart and a bond has been formed. “I have made lifelong friends here and gained an even deeper love for football. It is exciting to be here because everyday is different. We learn different skills and fitness techniques and I encourage girls from 13 and upwards to consider joining this family. We don’t discriminate, we just love,” she said.
