Bluff conservancy in the pipeline

As a result of discussions, the ward committee has narrowed the possible choices down to three, and it wants the community to vote for their favourite

BLUFF’S ward 66 committee and its conservation and coastal preservation sub-committee are working towards establishing a conservancy in the area.

In order to get the public on board, the committee will run a competition on Facebook where residents can vote for their most preferred names for the conservancy, to narrow the suggestions down to three.

“Our discussions revolved around what makes this place so special because that would inform the choice of name for the conservancy. A selection of choices were discussed including, South Dunes Conservancy Durban, igQuma South Conservancy (igQuma is isiZulu for ‘bluff’) and South Basin Dunes Conservancy.

The establishment of a conservancy on the Bluff would allow its many unique features some form of protection. These include the wetland, forest area and bird sanctuary at Bluff Nature Reserve, which is South Africa’s oldest nature reserve; the local rocky shore, which is the best example of inter-tidal rock pool habitat on the entire coast; unique coastal grasslands at Treasure Beach; the recently relocated rare marsh grassland in Van Riebeeck Park; the prominent ridges of the two dunes that form the geographic backbone of the area with the valley which runs between them; and the whale migration and the sardine run which has made Bluff world famous.

“These, in addition to the beaches, reefs, Coastal Admiralty Reserve, and the parks provide habitats for a wide range of wildlife too. The area is of great social, cultural, historical and economic importance which many people benefit from,” he added.

As a result of discussions, the ward committee has narrowed the possible choices down to three, and it wants the community to vote for their favourite:

  • South Dunes Conservancy – Durban
  •  igQuma South Conservancy (igQuma is isiZulu for ‘bluff’)
  • South Basin Dunes Conservancy

To vote go to the Bluff Community Noticeboard Facebook page and cast your vote.

Residents will have two weeks to vote, as voting will close on Tuesday, 25 September.
