SDCEA hosts cancer meeting after high benzene levels noted in South Durban
Results of the benzene testing done showed alarmingly high levels
RESIDENTS who are suffering from cancer, survived cancer or have lost a loved one to the disease have been invited by the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) to attend a cancer meeting on Wednesday, 18 July at Austerville Civic Centre from 9am to 1pm.
SDCEA has conducted air quality monitoring around chemical and petrochemical hotspots in South Durban.

Results of the benzene testing done showed alarmingly high levels which may give rise to serious health problems, according to director, Desmond D’sa.
“We have started a cancer registry and already a significant number of people are signing on who have cancer or whose family members have died of this dread disease. We also have spoken to religious leaders who have stated they are burying people regularly who are dying of cancer,” he added.
All those who attend the meeting will be required to complete the cancer registry form. This will assist with SDCEA’s free 24-hour cancer clinic campaign.
