A WOMAN saw justice served when one of the two men who held her at knifepoint and stole her bag last November was handed an eight year prison sentence in court on Friday, 15 June.
The woman had been walking along a foot bridge heading towards Himalayas Road in Merebank when two men who were sitting on the bridge confronted her.
“One was armed with a knife and he grabbed her bag but she resisted,” said Capt Mbuso Gumede. This aggravated the man, who threatened her with a knife before cutting the strap of her bag. With the bag in hand, the duo fled while the woman screamed for help.

“Hearing her cries for help, a resident chased after the men and managed to catch the one who had the stolen bag. The bag was identified by the woman and returned to her, while the 33-year-old man was handed over to Const Bhekithemba Zulu for further investigation,” added Capt Gumede.
The detective investigated, collected evidence and recorded witness statements. The bag thief was charged, while bail was opposed in Wentworth court.

Const Zulu’s thorough work led to the man being found guilty of aggravated robbery, for which he was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment. The community was praised for apprehending the criminal in the woman’s time of need. “This will serve as a good example to other residents in the fight against crime, urging them to work in partnership with the police. The community and the investigating officer who work tirelessly are applauded,” said Capt Gumede.
