Beware of online fraud deposit scams, warns Wentworth SAPS

A number of fraud cases have been reported to the police

WENTWORTH police warn residents not to deposit money into a stranger’s bank account in an attempt to purchase unseen items online.
A number of fraud cases have been reported to the police where cars are advertised in newspapers or online and clients are lured into depositing money to secure the item’s purchase.
“Don’t deposit money into an account until you have physically seen the item and written agreements are made or the full details of the seller is known.

People are depositing their money with only the promise of receiving the car or valuable items afterwards. They wait and end up not receiving the items or a return of their deposited money,” said Wentworth SAPS spokeman, Capt Mbuso Gumede.

These cases of fraud have been reported to the police and are subject to investigation. Capt Gumede urged people to rather buy from registered dealers or someone they have met. “Do your deal in a legal way. Don’t fall victim to this fraudulent scam.”
