Wentworth SAPS warns of Merewent burglary spike

The criminals use gloves while commiting thefts and burglaries, thus masking their fingerprints and identities.

WENTWORTH police warn residents that property crime is on the rise in the Merewent area.

Popular items that are being stolen include cellphones, laptops and television sets.
“The crimes are committed early in the morning where windows and doors are forced open to gain entry into private, residential premises,” said Wentworth SAPS communication officer, Capt Mbuso Gumede.

He advised residents to ensure that security measures are in place, including the installation of burglar guards. “If you have to leave your premises for a long period of time, inform and arrange security for your home. Do not leave house keys with anyone except those you trust,” he added.

He urged residents to not leave anything in open view where it is easily accessible. Tools and other expensive equipment are also stolen and residents should ensure they lock their garage doors.
