Actors, singers and musos sought for Playhouse production

Actors, singers and musical boffs are needed as the Playhouse Company hosts auditions soon for the celebrated playwright, Gibson Kente’s ‘How Long’.

Auditions will begin on 14 December and callbacks will take place on 15 December.

Training and vast experience in musical theatre will be an advantage and casting will focus on experienced actors who can sing and dance.

The following roles need to be filled:

Africa Twala (singing, dancing, acting role)

Young energetic teenager between the ages of 18 – 20. He is the Soweto student type, loud, fast, hyper and full of fun. He is humorous and has a tendency to brush away problems. An eternal optimist who is spunky and always on the move.

Magwaza (singing acting role)

A foreman between the ages of 35 – 45. He is a leader of the men working as garbage collectors. He is also a mashonisa – loud, bodacious and boisterous.

Ensemble

Strong singers who can also dance and strong dancers who can also sing, all between the ages of 20 and 28.

All auditionees are expected to prepare two three-minute monologues for the audition: One that is similar to the character for which they audition and one that contrasts with the character being auditioned.

Prepare one of the following songs:

Females: Paradise Road (Joy); Noma Kanjani (Brenda Fassie); Amazulu (Amanda Black); Nizalwa Ngobani (Thandiswa Mazwai).

Males: Sondela (Ringo Madlingozi); Nomvula (Nathi); Tigi (Sands) and Memeza (Vusi Nova).

All auditionees are required to learn and memorise audition songs. No-one will be auditioned if they do not know at least one of the prescribed songs.
