POLICE WARNING: Don’t use fireworks around Durban South refineries

Police issue warning about serious injuries that could follow should fireworks be used near the national keypoint

THE communities surrounding Engen Refinery have been warned to not use any fireworks such as crickets and flares near any national keypoints like the refinery in Tara Road.

With the festive season approaching, it is anticipated that the use of fireworks will increase and Wentworth SAPS and Engen management warned that the use of fireworks near this keypoint can cause devastating burns and blasts that will end in serious injuries.

“This is also a potential fire starter if thrown in the vicinity of refineries in the Durban South basin,” said communications officer, Capt Mbuso Gumede.
National keypoints are those sites that are afforded protection against sabotage as they’re deemed to be of national strategic importance. They fall under the auspices of the National Key Points Act of 1980.

The firing of fireworks or distress flares in the vicinity of refineries are prohibited since these are national keypoints in Durban South and will ignite a dangerous situation.

“We ask residents to refrain from throwing fireworks or distress flares on private properties in industrial areas in the South Durban South Basin. Residents need to be cautious when using fireworks during the festive season and children must use them under the supervision of their parents or guardians at all times.”
