Bluff drug campaign urges scholars to ‘just say no’

Parents can influence their children’s decisions about banned substances during the senior primary phase

A DRUG awareness campaign hosted by Brighton Beach SAPS throughout October worked to encourage children to stay away from bad habits including underage smoking, drugs and drinking.

The project dubbed ‘Safer schools – emoji: Just say no’ was researched and developed by communication officer, Capt Louise Le Roux who created brochure and teaching aids to highlight substance abuse at local senior primary schools.

She did not limit the teaching to the pupils but also shared advice with parents, guardians and caregivers.

“Parents can influence their children’s decisions about banned substances during the senior primary phase, as this is when children tend to be excited to learn about new things and facts, and become more inquisitive. Encourage open discussions about banned substances, their long and short-term effects, consequences and health implications for the body and mind. Be open and honest with them and teach your child to say no to peer pressure, and discuss the importance of thinking and acting as an individual,” she said.

Two static displays held at the Bluff Hillside Mall allowed for 750 ‘just say no!’ brochures to be distributed to locals and visitors. “An additional 1,000 brochures were distributed at the Pine Road bridge in Clairwood on Thursday, 2 November at 6.30am to early morning pedestrians and commuters. Crime talks at schools will continue after the exams,” she added.

Warrant Officer JJ Sonnekus, Brighton Beach Sector Commander distributed 1 000 “Just Say No!” School Safety Brochures at the Pine Road Bridge, Clairwood with Capt. L.T. Le Roux on Thursday the 2nd of November as of 6.30am in the morning.
