The refinery has also launched a free SMS line to grow its community database. Community members can now receive an SMS from SAPREF, alerting them of happenings such as plant shutdowns, flaring incidents or job opportunities.

To receive the refinery’s SMS updates, Durban South residents should send an SMS with their name and surname, cell number and suburb of residence to 30577.

“The SMS comes at no cost to the sender as it is paid for by SAPREF,” said Cindy Govender, SAPREF’s sustainable development manager. “Being a good neighbour is important to us as we believe the prosperity of our operations and of the communities in which we operate are co-dependent. We have therefore always been committed to keeping community members updated through our traditional communication media such as flyers.

However, in this age of social media which offers the benefit of instant communication and information sharing, we invite our community members to be part of our online community by connecting with SAPREF through these platforms. We urge community members to respond to our call for information and to SMS their contact details to so that we can include them on our database for our alerts,” she added.
