JUST IN: Joint op sees cardiac patient airlifted from vessel off Durban

Netcare 911 and NSRI personnel were flown out to sea

A person with a cardiac complaint was rescued from a vessel some ten nautical miles out to sea from Durban at about 3.30pm on Thursday afternoon, 12 October.

The Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC) received the call for assistance from the vessel and a multi-agency team was compiled including it, National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), Transnet Port Authority  (TNPA) and its helicopter and Netcare 911.

An advanced life support paramedic joined the NRSI rescue boat and headed out to the vessel. Realising that strong winds and large swells would make it difficult to execute a safe rescue from the ship to the rescue craft, the helicopter was deployed as a safer option.

Netcare 911 and NSRI personnel were flown out to sea in the TNPA helicopter and hoisted down to the vessel. A 39-year-old man was stabilised by the team and loaded into a rescue stretcher. He was hoisted into the helicopter and airlifted under the constant care of the paramedic to an awaiting emergency unit for further assessment and care. He was in a stable condition.
