Durban to join in global #MarchAgainstExtinction

DURBAN will join cities across the world this Saturday, 7 October, as its citizens march with one voice in the Global March for Elephants, Rhinos and Lions.

Drawing attention to the crisis facing these species and calling for an end to the ivory, rhino horn and lion bone trades, the peaceful protest #MarchAgainstExtinction takes place from the Durban amphitheatre on Saturday, 7 October from 9.30am to 4pm. The Durban march starts at 10am, proceeding towards Suncoast Casino and returning thereafter to the amphitheatre.

After the march, there will be food and drink stalls and live entertainment for the family. All funds raised through the sale of merchandise and public donations will be donated to Project Rhino KZN and the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi K9 unit.

Some frightening statistics released ahead of the global protest action are:

• An elephant is killed every 15 minutes – that’s around 100 every day and an annual toll of 35,000 to 50,000.
• A rhino is poached every nine to 11 hours, with an estimated 24,000 left in the world.
• Over 1,000 rhinos were poached last year alone, compared to just 13 in 2007. If the rate of killing continues to rise, rhinos too will face extinction within the decade.
• Each day at least two to three hand-reared, tamed lions are killed in canned hunts in South Africa.
• Currently, almost 8,000 predators are held in cages or confined areas.

The Global March calls for urgent concerted action to be taken on all levels to save these highly intelligent, emotionally sentient, socially complex species who have roamed the earth for millions of years.
