UPDATE: Hoax SMS the source of logistics park protest action

A hoax SMS message sent out to unemployed Durban South job applicants last night was the cause of the angered protesting that took place outside the former Clairwood Racecourse this morning, Thursday, 28 September.

Nico Prinsloo, development manager of the Fortress Income Fund, the developers of the Clairwood Logistics Park, said he was deeply disturbed to learn a hoax SMS was sent out to job applicants last night, telling them to report for work at the site at 6am today. “It was inconceivable why anyone would send such a message to members of their community, requiring them to find money for transport to the site only to find the message was a hoax,” he said.

Protesters blocked the M4 and caused delays with the morning traffic

Prinsloo said that they were constantly reviewing their processes to maintain and improve communication with local communities.

“The Clairwood team remains committed to engaging with the key stakeholders and interested parties. The project steering committee (PSC) at Clairwood has representation from the wards closest to the logistics park and business forums to ensure that the liaison teams are working efficiently,” he said.

He added that the PSC would meet again next week.
