Bluff bodyboarders amped to ride waves at local SA champs

Locals set to show their skills in bodyboarding contest.

BODYBOARDING Bluffites will do their home surf proud when they compete in the 31st South African Bodyboarding Championships in Durban in October.

Five locals have made the eThekwini Bodyboarding Association (EBA) squad which will represent the area in the competition from 1 to 7 October.

They hope it will be a roaming event, so as to give the Bluff a chance to host the cream of the surf.

“A roaming event means three beaches will be selected as potential venues for the competition. The beaches will be the Bluff, Umhlanga and town beach area between North Pier and Suncoast. Taking into account the surf and weather on the eve of the event, the organisers will alert the competitors to where the best place will be on the day,” said one of the Bluff EBA members, Brenden Greenaway.

The EBA (formerly the Central KwaZulu-Natal Bodyboarding Association) has much to live up to, having won 27 of the 30 South African Bodyboarding Championship’s Fishman trophy since the competition began in 1987. The Fishman is awarded to the team with the highest overall score.

This year the competition is partnering with the Quadpara Association of KwaZulu-Natal and Adaptive Surfing South Africa, expanding the opportunities for more athletes to show off their skill and fortitude.

Continuing with their mission to bring their sport to the many, clinics will be held throughout the event for underprivileged children. These youngsters will not only be taught about bodyboarding, but about the ocean and ocean safety.

So keep a keen eye out for exhilarating and skilful displays on the waves.
