Transform unwanted bread slices into delicious treats

Don't throw away that bread, give it a new lease on life and turn it into a delicious dish

There are always those few slices in a loaf that everyone refuses to touch – like the first and last slice.

So what must you do with these fresh slices? Turn it into a new and delicious dish!

Bread and butter pudding.

The popular and classic choice for the cook of the house to get rid of the leftover slices

You will need:

  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 2 eggs, slightly beaten
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon or nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 6 cups soft bread cubes (about 6 slices bread)
  • 1/2 cup raisins, if desired
  • Whipping (heavy) cream, if desired

METHOD: 

  1. Heat oven to 176 degrees.
  2. In a saucepan, heat milk and butter over medium heat until butter is melted and milk is hot.
  3. In a large bowl, mix eggs, sugar, cinnamon and salt.
  4. Stir in bread cubes and raisins.
  5. Stir in milk mixture.
  6. Pour into ungreased deep round pan.
  7. Bake uncovered 40 to 45 minutes or until knife inserted 1 inch from edge comes out clean.
  8. Serve warm with whipping cream.

 French toast

Be more glamourous with your french toast and impress your children with this recipe by Marth Stewart:

 

You will need:

  • bread
  • Egg
  • Skim milk
  • Maple syrup
  • Strawberries
  1. Beat an egg, using a fork, in a medium, low bowl.
  2. Add about ¾ cup milk per each egg used.
  3. Add a teaspoon of maple syrup and stir well.
  4. Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut out heart shapes from the center of bread slices.
  5. Dip all bread pieces into egg mixture and set onto pancake griddle or large skillet set on medium heat.
  6. Brown lightly on both sides.
  7. Garnish with cut strawberries and maple syrup.
