Raid halts occupation of Bluff Zanzibari land
Illegal shacks are being built on the land.
BLUFF Community Policing Forum (CPF) co-ordinated a raid at the end of June on the vagrants who started to occupy the land known as Zanzibar land adjacent to Hartlepool and Tara roads.
They were assisted by members of Brighton Beach SAPS, the municipal land invasion unit and parks department.
“When handling this type of illegal occupation we need Durban Solid Waste (DSW) to assist to remove the material. Our operation changed from the army base beachfront to this location and it was too late to notify DSW. This one was deemed to be more important,” said Bluff CPF chairman, Carl Knauff.
“We had serious problems in the past with vagrants occupying the land on the slopes of Kings Rest towards the Transnet rail lines. The rate at which they erected the shacks was alarming. The land invasion unit destroyed six shacks, however, there were already sites prepared to erect another five.”
Knauff said Brighton Beach SAPS has added the area to its patrol routes and will keep track of any new construction taking place.
“If this development is not curtailed in time, it will have a detrimental effect on crime in and the comfort of the adjacent community.”
