From acacia to zanthoxylum under discussion

Renowned botanist Prof Eugene Moll will talk about the interesting challenges and thrilling research involved in compiling Hugh Clarke’s book

RENOWNED botanist Prof Eugene Moll will talk about the interesting challenges and thrilling research involved in compiling Hugh Clarke’s book, The Illustrated Dictionary of Southern African Plant Names, of which he is the editor, at a Botanical Society talk on Monday, 10 July.

This ‘dictionary’ is a world first.

Not only are there more than 5,000 entries with 500 photographs of people who have had genera named after them, but there are also about 600 photographs of plants, many of them illustrating the diagnostic feature of the genus.

The book pays tribute to many of the leading botanists of the last 100 to 150 years. Books will be for sale at a special price of R395 (normally R450).

Meet at Durban Botanic Gardens Visitors Centre in John Zikhali Road (formerly Sydenham Road) at 6pm. Entry costs R40 for members of BotSoc and R60 for non-members; students with cards pay R30. Pay at the door. Entrance includes refreshments.

Proceeds go to BotSoc branch projects. For enquiries email botsoc-kzn@mweb.co.za or call 031-201-5111 or 071-869-3693.
