GRAB your coffee and press down that toaster, it’s national Breakfast Day and South Africans all over will be celebrating the reason why we wake up every morning.

The idea of breakfast has been around since the 15th century. It came into use in written English to describe a morning meal, which literally means to break the fasting period of the prior night. In Old English the term was morgenmete meaning “morning meal.”

In South Africa, breakfast means left-over braai meat with egg and tomato chutney or nutritious local cereals such as Pronutro, Weetbix or marmite on toast. No matter what it is, we love breakfast.

But why is it important to start the day off with a morning meal? Apart from providing us with an early energy boost, it’s an important source of nutrients to keep us healthy.
