UPDATE: Durban’s Bayhead blaze spreading as adjacent buildings evacuated

It is not clear if the rain has hampered or helped firefighting efforts.

MORE than 20 fire trucks are battling the blaze at a depot off Solomon Mahlangu Drive, according to Rescue Care’s Garrith Jamieson.

The huge warehouse off Solomon Mahlangu Drive and South Coast roads started burning this morning.

The blaze is being fed by heavy winds that are fanning the flames, sending billowing clouds of smoke across the city’s CBD as efforts continue to bring it under control.

Adjacent buildings, including Transnet staff, were evacuated in the vicinity.

Paramedics have confirmed that in addition to an earlier injury sustained by a 35-year-old, a fireman has also been taken to hospital after sustaining burn injuries to his hands.

UPDATE: Part of fire-ravaged building collapses

Many motorists have stopped to photograph the fire and they are urged to stay away to keep the roads clear.

The smoke has blacked out much of the skyline and can be seen as far away as Durban North. The northerly wind is blowing the smoke over the M4 southern freeway, reducing visibility considerably. Visibility on Solomon Mahlangu Drive remains clear.
