Quins rugby keen to build on lessons learnt

Harlequins showed a lot of guts and fighting spirit but a few wrong decisions and accuracy let them down at crucial times.

HARLEQUINS Rugby Club played premier league club Varsity College in the semi final of the very popular Flya tournament at Crusaders at the weekend.

The Bluff boys got off to a shocking start when some poor defence allowed Varsity College in for an opener under the poles within three minutes.

To their credit, Quins came back very well and scored a try of their own through tireless hooker Tyler Barnard. For the rest of the half, Quins enjoyed territorial advantage without really capitalising on their opportunities. Varsity College dealt a tough blow to Quins’ hopes when they worked the blindside and scored their second try on the halftime whistle, to go into the break at 12-5.

In the second half the premier league side found more rhythm in their game and had Quins scrambling on defense on a number of occasions. The third try of Varsity College was a thing of beauty as their backline ran beautiful angles to cross the tryline virtually untouched.

Harlequins showed a lot of guts and fighting spirit but a few wrong decisions and accuracy let them down at crucial times. The final score of 19-5 offered a well-deserved victory for Varsity College who were just that little sharper, more organised and fitter on the night.

For Quins it was a great outing with the full squad having another run against premier league opponents. It’s getting better every game and there’s lots to look forward to.

The second XV played a friendly against College Rovers seconds and were up against it all afternoon. The visitors were just that much better in all departments and their physical size also took its toll. The final score was 67–5, but some valuable lessons were learnt which will stand them in good stead for the coming season. Despite the scoreline, there were some good performances.

No more fixtures are scheduled until the league starts in two weeks. Now it’s fine tuning the structures and ironing the creases to ensure the league gets off to a solid start. Coaches Devan Dippenaar, Shawn van Rensburg and Charl Bezuidenhout are confident their charges will be ready and help restore the Mighty Quins to former glory days.
