UPDATE: Fatal Clairwood crash fires up taxi debate

The accident on the corner of Blamey and South Coast Road has claimed the life of another person

OUTRAGE and condolences have flooded social media for the family after the death of a seven-year-old child in a collision this morning (Tuesday, 24 January) in Clairwood.

The crash at the corner of Blamey and South Coast roads also resulted in the subsequent death of a pedestrian, while a four-year-old passenger was also critically injured.

The child (4) is since said to have stabilised.

Ward 64 (Montclair, Woodlands and YWP) councillor, Gavin Hegter, sent his condolences to the affected families and addressed the issue of taxis in the area. “Although this road does not fall within ward 64, it still affects us as it is the major entrance into the area. There has been some heated discussion about taxis and concern over their reckless driving in the suburb. I have approached Metro Police to assist with more enforcement and I urge the community who are confronted with issues with taxis to record the registration or taxi association number, and put it in writing so I can follow it up.

A Facebook user Trevor Blem who commented online, said: “I live in Montclair. Everyday I see taxis jumping the robots, making U-turns and speeding in South Coast Road. If you come from Blamey Road or from Jacobs, you have to keep your eyes and ears open. Metro Police can’t control them. Get the RTI to monitor these robots.”

The taxi debate has been ongoing, some saying the drivers are to blame for reckless driving and complete disregard for the road rules. “It’s not about being against taxis. At the end of the day that is a form of transport for our growing community. Rather, we have to challenge the recklessness, misconduct and attitude of the drivers. It is unfortunate that something so tragic must happen for people to realise the issue. I plead with the community to report them,” said Gavin.
