St Monica’s home needs academic tutors

They were never afforded the opportunity to have a solid basic foundation in their education

ST Monica’s Children’s Home’s child and youth care centre are on the lookout for tutors in mathematics, business studies and science to volunteer at the centre and assist their children who are in grades 8 to 11.

The home is facing a challenge with some of its children who are struggling with their studies. Senior administrator of St Monica’s, Vijee Pillay said the children at the home come from disadvantaged backgrounds. “They were never afforded the opportunity to have a solid basic foundation in their education. Some of them have reached high school by merely receiving a condoned pass,” said Pillay.

The children attend local schools in Merebank, Wentworth, Austerville and special schools in surrounding areas. “The situation with the schools at present does not allow for individual attention and engagement with the teachers, resulting in some of the children failing to grasp their school work,” she added.

She appealed to the public, especially teachers or retired teachers, to assist the children by volunteering an hour per week or more.

“The children need help in grasping basic math concepts and language comprehension. Assistance with the older children is needed in grades 8 to 11 in mathematics, business studies and life science as well as assistance in effective study methods,” she added.
