Racist Diwali ranter back in court today

Kriel is expected to plead guilty.

THE Bluff man whose racist rant about Diwali devotees is back in court today (Tuesday, 7 January).

Dawie Kriel caused an uproar after he posted a tirade on Facebook directed to the Hindu festival Diwali and its followers.

His post referred to idol worshippers and devil worshippers, after he took umbridge at the use of fireworks during Diwali.

Irate Facebook users shared Facebook post, urging the public to report him to the Human Rights Commission (HRC). Kriel issued an apology on his page for his racist rant, saying it was out of anger as the animals he cares for were traumatised by the big bangs.

The ANC and DA both laid a charge of crimen injuria against Kriel following his public gaffe on 31 December. Both parties have attended his previous court dates and are at the Durban Magistrates Court today, where Kriel is expected to plead guilty.
