Beware of police impersonator criminals

Try to minimise your chances of being targeted by not withdrawing large amounts of cash.

BE aware of criminals posing as police officers to get your cash.

An alert has been issued by Umlazi SAPS about a gang of criminals dressed in police uniform, who are scamming people out of money.

“There have been a few cases opened, where this same modus operandi is used in the greater Durban area. There is a group of men operating in Durban, acting as if they are police officials. The SAPS is investigating this concerning matter,” said KZN Media’s Colonel Thembeka Mbhele.

“They are operating as a group of individuals wearing SAPS uniform who approach a person with the knowledge that they are carrying a large amount of money. They will say there has been a case of bank robbery opened and they will further inform them of the exact amount of money the individual is carrying. When they search the person, and of course, find the exact amount of money mentioned, they carry out a false arrest.”

The following preventive measures provided by the police should minimise your risk of being scammed:

* Don’t withdraw large amounts of cash, rather use EFTs.

* Ensure only one person you trust knows you are going to withdraw money.

* In case of stokvel withdrawals, members withdrawing the money shouldn’t let other members know of the date the money will be withdrawn and should rather opt to pay it into bank accounts.

* Opt for credit card payments if purchasing goods that cost a lot.

What should you do if these criminals target you?

* Keep calm.

* Ask the police to produce their appointment certificates before they search you. If they refuse to do that, never allow them to search you.

* If you are searched by force, call the police as soon as they leave.

* Don’t go after them. Remember as many details about them as possible, like complexion, height or appearance and if they are using a car, try to remember the number plate.

“SAPS members are dedicated to keeping the community safe. It is sad that criminals will go to any length to successfully commit a crime, even that of impersonating a police officer. The SAPS appeal to the community to be vigilant and to phone 10111 or your nearest police station. The community are urged to work with the police to ensure success in apprehending this group of impersonators. Together we can fight crime and keep our communities safe.”
