Protesters march in murdered man’s memory

We thank everyone who supported us

A WALK was held in memory of murdered Bluff man, Gerhardus Petrus Benade (27) on Saturday, 22 October at the Bluff showgrounds.

Family and friends gathered in protest against the unjust murder which happened on Sunday, 9 October when Gertjie, as he was lovingly known, was beaten to death with a car jack. Two men were arrested for the murder and appeared in court on 11 October. Because of his age, the 16-year-old was released into the custody of his grandfather while the 25-year-old was released on R5,000 bail. Both are due back in court on Friday, 13 January 2017.

Cars, pedestrians and even a fire truck showed their support as they honked and waved while the group walked past the local mall. With a massive sign ‘Justice for Gertjie‘ the protesters made clear their dissatisfaction about the court’s recent bail hearing.

“We thank everyone who supported us and we urge the community to join us in upcoming marches as it’s in the community’s interests to fight injustices in our area. It’s about everyone not just Gertjie. We must reclaim our area, creating a safer environment for our children, ” said family spokesman, Charmaine Jeremiah.
