Man dies in wheel spanner beating

Witnesses in the other vehicles were left terrified

BEATEN with a wheel spanner, a man was killed in the drive-through of a Bluff fast food outlet over the weekend.

At about 2.45am on Sunday morning, a line of cars was waiting their turn in the drive-through at McDonalds. According to witnesses who spoke to the Southlands Sun, the five occupants of the car at the paypoint were causing a commotion.

A woman, who asked not to be named, said her car was caught in the middle. “Two men from the car in front and behind us fought in front of us. They were swearing at each other when the deceased punched the man in the face,” said the woman. The man who had been punched looked embarrassed and allegedly threatened the man who punched him. He walked towards his car, returned and they spoke before the man got back his car.

Witnesses in the other vehicles were left terrified, including one woman who filmed the initial altercation.

“We were so scared but the man who later died came up to us and apologised for ruining our night and we had a conversation. We continued on in the drive-through line and when we turned the corner we saw the man who was punched open the boot and pulled out a jack and his friend produced a knife. By then we were parked in the driveway because I knew something would happen,” said the witness.

Three other girls were in the car. “One of the girls came out and approached the victim and started swearing at him before returning to the car,” she added.

Once she saw the weapons, she called the police in the hope they could intervene before matters escalated. “I saw a police van drive by but it never came in,” she added.

The group of people and the victim went around the corner, out of sight, when the witness heard screaming. The girl who was swearing earlier was lying on the floor and crying.

“We knew something happened. We then saw the people fetch their food in the restaurant, jump back into their car and drive off,” she added. Once the group left, the witness and her passengers went to see what happened.
They found the man who had thrown a punch earlier lying, unconscious on the floor in a pool of blood. “We called an ambulance which took so long and while we were waiting, we got help from other drivers. We all tried helping – one of the men put a shirt on the victim’s head because there was so much blood,” recalled the witness.

The suspect then assaulted the deceased with a motor vehicle jack on his head. The victim was transported to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The suspect fled the scene in his vehicle,” he said. A case of murder was opened at Brighton Beach for investigation. All five suspects were found and arrested on Gravies and will appear in court on Tuesday, 11 October.
