Thief apologises for stealing

“I AM sorry for stealing” were the words that greeted two Brighton Beach constables as they approached a man on South Coast Road at 3am on Monday, 15 July.

Csts Thwala and Zuma were on patrol in the early hours of the morning when they observed two men pushing a wagon covered with a black refuse bag. As they approached one of the men bolted, but the police officers were able to question the second man, aged 39, who immediately apologised for stealing when asked what was in the wagon.

The wagon contained, among other items, flour, chewing tobacco and salt, which police placed in their vehicle along with the thief. After a short search of the area Csts Thwala and Zuma found the second thief, aged 20, running along South Coast Road and he was quickly arrested.

They confessed to stealing the items from a bakery in Pine Road, which they pointed out to the officers. They were charged with being in possession of property suspected to be stolen and appeared in court later that day, before being placed in police custody for further investigation.

A report of housebreaking and theft against the men has not yet been laid by the owner of the business and the seized items remain in police custody. As the men admitted to being in possession of stolen property, court proceedings will continue despite the owner’s lack of laying a charge against them. Should the owner choose to open a case, that charge will be added at a later stage.

Brighton Beach SAP management commends the two constables for their vigilance and the quick arrest and recovery of the stolen property.
