R40,000 gas cylinder deal goes up in smoke

Screen the person or people you intend engaging with in business deals.

MORE than R40,000 was conned out of a woman who placed an order for gas cylinders.

According to the fraud victim, she placed an order with a company and was promised it would be delivered on Monday, 8 August.

Monday came and went while the woman from Leicester Road, Mobeni received no cylinders despite having effected the payment. When she tried calling the company, there was no answer.

Her suspicions grew and she contacted the bank to make enquiries about the company. “The bank told her the account number was correct but the company name did not exist,” said Montclair SAPS communications officer, Cpt Dereck Vijiam. The company address was traced back to Cape Town.

“Screen the person or people you intend engaging with in business deals. One needs to be alert that there are unscrupulous people who are eager and ever ready to make a quick deal to the detriment of the victim,” added Cpt Vijiam.
