Debris closes Durban beaches

HIGH seas and flotsam have closed Durban’s North and South beaches.

Storm damage and organic matter have also resulted in the closures and eThekwini Municipality in a statement issued this afternoon.

“The decision to close beaches has been taken as a precautionary measure, to ensure the safety of residents and holidaymakers.

There is extensive structural damage on Durban’s beaches following heavy rains that started on Sunday, 24 July. There is also a huge amount of flotsam and debris as well as organic matter in the water.

A major clean-up operation will be undertaken. The public will be notified once the beaches have been re-opened,” according to the municipality.
Ansteys and Brighton beaches have also seen huge waves today, but the Bluff coastline appears to be mostly free from debris and major damage.
