Blood spatter reveals criminals at murder scene

The criminals returned to the scene of the crime

IT was a case of the criminals returning to the scene of the crime, when two men were arrested on suspicion of murder in Clairwood on Saturday, 23 July.

Brighton Beach police officers responded to a report of a blood-covered body being found at the corners of Ganesh and Pine roads in Clairwood.

There they found a gathering of people, who had allegedly turned over the body, which had been found lying face down.

Brighton Beach SAPS trio crime’s Warrant Officers Marius van der Looy and Gerhard Grobler interviewed the onlookers, who described the crime.

They saw the man arguing with two others earlier in the evening, when one of them pulled out a knife.

Armed with the description of the men, the officers headed to the informal settlement in Houghton Road, where it was believed the men lived. Unfortunately, the search yielded no results.

Returning to the crime scene to await the arrival of the mortuary van, W/Os Van der Looy and Grobler saw two people among the throng who matched the description of the suspects.

The men, aged 23 and 24, were arrested on suspicion of murder when the policemen found blood splatter on their clothing.

The clothes have been sent for DNA analysis and the duo are expected to appear in Durban Regional Court on Tuesday, 26 July.

“Brighton Beach SAPS management commends the detective pair for showcasing their skills in interviewing techniques and observation skills at the scene of the crime, as generally assailants do not return to a scene of crime and watch the police at work,” said media officer, Captain Louise Le Roux.
