Environmental issues on the table at SDB meeting

Locals come together to discuss the environmental challenges of the SDB.

IN A bid to foster better relationships between locals and businesses and to create a cleaner environment for future generations, the SDB ABM hosted a climate change seminar on Friday, 24 June.

The South Durban Basin (SDB) Area Based Management (ABM) office event, held in Amanzimtoti, included civil society organisations, NGOs, ward councillors, ward committee members, community co-operatives, the environmental planning and climate protection department, energy office, disaster management, eThekwini water and sanitation and the environmental health department.

“The aim of the seminar was to raise awareness about the impacts of climate change and collaboratively rework measures to address this dilemma through the establishment of a common goal,” said the SDB ABM’s Sinenhlanhla Ntombela.

Industry and local businesses were urged to reduce their impact on the environment and the health of SDB people. “This means abiding by the set of rules and regulations set aside for environmental protection, implementing environmentally sound measures within areas of operation and prevention of further contributions to climate change,” said Ntombela.

Muncipal speaker, Cllr Logie Naidoo said: “Our first democratic president, the late Dr Nelson Mandela, once said, ‘A sustainable future for humankind depends on a caring partnership with nature as much as anything else’. Therefore we invite businesses and industries in the south of eThekwini to partner with us in implementing the Durban climate change strategy and collectively tackle climate change throughout KwaZulu-Natal.”

“The promotion of sustainable living is significant to all humankind and our future generations who may suffer far worse effects. Therefore we should strive towards creating harmony in the relationship between people and the environment,” added Ntombela.
