Muggers caught by victims (15)

The school boys chased them into the bushes.

QUICK thinking by two teenage school pupils helped in the arrest of two men who stole cash and cellphones from them in Merebank on 18 May, Wednesday.

The boys, both ages 15, who were on their way to school when they were approached by the men who greeted them and asked them for money.

The boys told them they had no money causing the men to become agitated and demand money. “The boys scraped together R2 and R5 from a wallet. One of the men saw there was more money in the wallet and he snatched it,” said Wentworth SAPS communication officer, Lt Mbuso Gumede.

They continued to search the school boys’ bags and found a cellphone before running off. The boys ran towards their school gates and informed their friends about the theft. “At the time the two thieves were running towards the Rawalpindi Road park, adjacent to the M4 freeway,” said Lt Gumede. The school boys chased them into the bushes. Not giving up, they continued the chase and caught one of the thieves, aged 18, inside a nearby banana field. “The other suspect managed to escape by running along the freeway towards the Umlazi bridge and disappeared with the stolen items,” add Lt Gumede.

Still not giving up, the boys alerted two men who were in a neighborhood in Umlazi about the incident. “The second thief was caught and was held until police came and placed him under arrest,” said Lt Gumede.

The school boys positively identified both suspects. The second man was taken to Wentworth SAPS station where he was detained for theft. The case is being investigated and the criminals will remain in custody.
