Battle over new Bluff principal

Principal's appointment has caused problems.

GLENARDLE Junior Primary has become a hotbed of contention following the appointment of a new principal earlier this month.

Miss P Bedesi was selected by the KZN Department of Education as the new head of the school, much to the consternation of the school’s governing body.

According to a letter sent to parents by the governing body, Miss Bedesi was not recommended nor ratified by them.

Things came to a head on Monday, 8 February when police were called in to calm the situation at the school.

Newly appointed principal, Miss P Bedesi had no comment on the matter and referred the Sun to the Department of Education.

Musi Mahlambi from the KZN Department of Education said they were disappointed with the governing body which does not want to “own its own products”.

Mahlambi said: “We are not there when they conduct their interviews and selection processes and when we appoint someone who was shortlisted by them based on their recommendations, they complain.

We only appoint people on merit and choose the most suitable candidate based on their score. When a governing body turns around and says ‘sorry, we don’t want that person’, it gives us the impression they wanted a specific individual in the position.

The appointed principal remains principal and if the governing body is unhappy, there is recourse for them to follow.”

The governing body has lodged an official grievance and will be taking the matter further.
