IT was a busy week on the greens at Wentworth Bowling Club.

The completion of club competitions for the women and much fun and merriment was enjoyed by those who participated in the Rugby World Cup day on Saturday.

Wednesday’s development bowls, sponsored by Family and Friends Guesthouse, saw the return of injured member Anne Bonthrone who celebrated her homecoming to the greens with Johan Nel and Albert van Niekerk. The trips side took home this week’s first prize. The biscuit prize was shared by Dave Carroll, Geanne Mitchell, Phil Hill, Stan McKenzie and Ruth Petzer. Ina Davies and Sandra Bonthrone were the winners of the first 60/40 board and, keeping it in the family, Anne Bonthrone won the first prize on the second board with Margaret Walters to take home the second prize.

The club coaches were kept busy with new bowlers taking advantage of the service offered by John Somerville and Ellen Loots. Coaching is available every Wednesday from 1.30pm. Any interested bowlers can call John on 083-512-4440.

The final game of the women’s drawn fours club competition was played on Wednesday afternoon. Maria Cavanagh’s team of Cheryl Waterman, Eileen du Plessis and Jenny Greef eventually emerged as victors over Cora van der Westhuizen, Ina Davies, Gwen Tait and Zoë Dougal and are the 2015 fours champions.

The women’s drawn trips club competition was contested on Thursday afternoon. In a reversal of fortune Maria and Eileen, playing with Bernedette Pool, succumbed to the top form demonstrated by Maree Sadie, Jo-Jo Jordaan and Jenny Greeff who are the 2015 women’s trips champions.

The Bluff Meats men’s bowls played every Friday morning saw Ken Thomas, Kurt Spack and Henry Welgemoed sneak a two shot lead ahead of second placed side, Herby Hoffman, Joe McNamara and Ivor Aylward. Colin Howes, Allen Ritchie and Dirk Roos were awarded the morning’s sportmen’s prize. Alan Bower won the week’s pork roast and John Somerville was all smiles when his number was drawn to give him the beef roast.

Two boards were drawn. The winners were Jumbo Nel and Stan MacKenzie with both second prizes going the way of Kurt Spack.

Bowlers arriving at the club for Saturday’s Rugby World Cup tournament were greeted by national flags that adorned the surrounds of the greens and the sound of cheerful music contributed to a festive atmosphere. With extra bowlers arriving, two additional invited sides in the form of the Sharks and the Stormers, were added to the list of participating teams. The generosity of the day’s sponsors, Howard’s Towing, was demonstrated by the number of prizes awarded after the bowls. The first toucher prize on the A green went to Roger Pienaar and Brian Brittain raised his voice in glee when his first bowl of the day won the toucher prize on B green. The first session prize was won by New Zealand, represented by Spider Williams and Cheryl Waterman with a plus 20. The second session prize was awarded to Joe Vorster and Hennie Marais representing Uruguay, who accumulated a plus 17. Second place overall were Maree Sadie and Jenny Greef, playing for Romania, with a healthy four plus 30. Maree and Jenny added to the day’s achievements with a clean sweep of an eight score during one of the ends in their first game. The day’s winners were the ‘nippy’ team from Japan represented by Errol Pienaar and Joe McNamara who managed to amass a score of four plus 36. The team winning the most ends was Italy, represented by the club’s green assistants, Luvoyo amd Moses. Vicky Williams and Dudley Saunders, playing for England, were declared the day’s sportsmen.

The game between the visiting Sharks and Stormers was won by the Stormers, aptly represented by Storm Neethling and Storm Beukes.
