Jackal pups under CROW’s care

Pups doing well.

FOUR rescued jackal pups are doing well at the Centre for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) in Yellowwood Park, thanks to care of staff member, Sue-Ann Schutte.

The pups, which are nearly three-weeks-old, were barely a week-old when they were found in a field in Empangeni.

According to CROW marketing and communications officer, Paul Hoyte, they were found by workers in a cane field.

“The workers were stormed by a jackal which then fled. Later they found the babies under an anthill and took them to Dr Geoff Fourie at Empangeni Veterinary Hospital, who took great care of them and handed them over to us,” said Hoyte.

Schutte was designated as the sole carer for the pups to minimise human interaction so they may be released into the wild when older.

“They are in good health and getting lots of TLC. It takes patience, but they are doing well,” said Schutte.

According to Hoyte, jackals are found throughout the country but are rarely seen because they are nocturnal.

Schutte added that when the foursome is eating solids on their own, they will be moved to an enclosure and should be released back into the wild in about six months.
