WEDNESDAY, 7 OCTOBER: Birdlife Port Natal invitation to a biodiversity seminar at Ushaka. Call Lesley to book, and for time and details on 083-231-3408. There is no indoor meeting on 14 October.

THURSDAY, 8 OCTOBER: Montclair Senior Citizens Club meets at 9.30am in the Methodist Church hall, where old favourites Tafta Follies will be entertaining members. All seniors in the area are welcome.

SATURDAY, 10 OCTOBER: Have you ever wondered what is in the sky that you cannot see with your naked eye? St George’s Church in Admiral Road on the Bluff will show a series of DVDs by Louie Giglio on this subject. The first one called ‘Indescribable’ will be shown at 2pm. Price of admission is R10 per person and there will be refreshments served after the DVD which is only about 1 hour long. No-one will have to miss the World Cup so go along for a pleasant afternoon. Little ones will be taken care of.

SATURDAY, 17 OCTOBER: Catch the second in a series of three DVDs on the subject of what is unseen at St George’s Church in Admiral Road, Bluff at 2pm. Admission costs R10 per person and refreshments will be served after the hour-long DVD.

SATURDAY, 24 OCTOBER: Mountain Backpackers Club hosts a Kloof Gorge day hike upstream to two waterfalls, leaving from the picnic site car park at 8.30am. There is a small entrance fee. Take sun protection, hat, water, snacks and a rain jacket. Moderate fitness is required. Confirm with John beforehand. Contact John McGovern on 082-659-5111.

SATURDAY, 31 OCTOBER: Join Ingrid Shevlin, journalist and food critic, and the South African Writers’ Circle from 9am until 2.30pm for a tasty review at Gecko Culinary Adventures in Musgrave Road, Durban. It will be a morning of cooking demonstrations, being shown the ropes on writing a review and sitting down to a delicious meal at lunchtime. SATURDAY, 31 OCTOBER: Mountain Backpackers Club hikers will tackle the African Fish Eagle trail with lots of birdlife through the Beachwood mangroves and along the north bank of the Umgeni river. Meet at Green Hub Durban at 8am to leave at 8.15am. The hike will be cancelled if it rains. Take cash for tea at Springfield SPCA at the halfway mark. The trail is about 13kms long. Meet at 8am at Umdloti beach carpark to walk to Umhlanga and back. Lunch at the Bush Tavern afterwards so book in advance. The walk will be cancelled if it rains.
